State pension age will rise less rapidly in the coming years
The state retirement age is rising less rapidly than planned according to the agreements in the recently reached pension agreement. In the current situation, the state pension age will increase in steps to 67 years in 2021. From 2022 the state pension age would be linked to life expectancy.
New agreements have been made about the state pension age in the pension agreement
From 1 January 2020, the state pension age will gradually increase to 67 in 2024. From 2025, the state pension age will be linked to life expectancy in the Netherlands. The exact state pension age is known 5 years in advance. Check every year in January whether the state pension age has changed on svb.nl.

Policy funding ratio 120.8% at the end of June
The fund’s policy funding ratio at the end of June 2019 was 120.8%. The funding ratio expresses the ratio of the fund's assets to its pension liabilities.
According to the rules set by the government, our assets must be 15.3% more than our liabilities. This is expressed as a required funding ratio of 115.3%. This buffer ensures that the fund has sufficient reserves and can still afford to pay everyone a pension even in case of financial setbacks. The current policy funding ratio is higher than this required funding ratio, meaning that the pension fund has sufficient financial reserves.

More information on the development of the funding ratio is available on the funding ratios page.

Looking ahead
The pension fund has been what is known as a closed fund since 1 July 2018. Pension is no longer accrued in the fund and no contributions are due. The board continues to check whether the current implementation is still the best option for all stakeholders.
A closed pension fund can continue to exist independently. The pension assets are expected to generate an investment return sufficient to pay the pensions (including supplement allocation, if all goes well). Closed-end funds do run certain risks, however, as even such relatively small funds must comply with all legislation and regulation and must have fit and proper trustees.
The pension agreement, what's next?
The government, employers and employees (the social partners) have reached agreement on the strong elements of our current pension system that should remain and what needs to change with respect to how we currently accrue pension.
Reaching a pension agreement brings us a step closer to a future-proof pension system.

Under the new pension system, pensions will more quickly reflect what is happening in the economy. This means that indexation of pensions will be more likely in good economic times. On the other hand, pensions will be more likely to be reduced in times of economic weakness.
